It’s somewhat common knowledge that using your smartphone at night can ruin your sleep cycle. But that new iPhone 6 won’t just ruin your sleep cycle, it can affect your physical and mental health as well. It is the blue light from these smartphones that is harmful

Blue light is the light that signals your body to suppresses production of melatonin which regulates your sleep cycle. This can lead to a number of health problems including obesity, depression and memory issues. It is part of the full light spectrum, so we experience it everyday, just during the day. Research shows that being exposed to that light via LED screens at night can damage your vision as well.

Blue light is very bright, which is why it is so useful for smartphones, and over the last 10 to 15 years we’ve had increased exposure to this light, and now we are starting to see there may be consequences.

Don’t make using a smartphone at night a habit, the blue light has significant consequences. Studies have shown that it can damage the retina, and that can lead to macular degeneration, which hinders the ability to see what is directly in front of you.

Though unproven, blue light may lead to cataracts. Though anecdotal, many optometrists are starting to see younger patients with cataracts. Also unproven, but research shows a correlation between individuals whose melatonin production is suppressed and their risk for cancer.

It’s not all bad, however. Blue light can be healthy, just not before bed. If your on your phone in the morning, for example, that blue light is signaling your body to stop producing melatonin, which is good for you. This is the same reason many experts suggest getting sunlight in the morning if possible.

There are some apps that limit the blue light coming form your phone if you absolutely have to be on your phone.
